Why SPF is Your BFF - The Reality of Sun Damage and How to Integrate SPF in Your Routine

As spring turns to summer for us over in the northern hemisphere (finally!), wearing a daily SPF is more vital than ever. Even though sunscreen is often left out during the colder months, studies show that 80-90% of all visible signs of ageing are from sun exposure at all times of the year. Yes, you heard that right!

While there’s nothing wrong with the natural, beautiful process of ageing, wearing sunscreen is one of the most important things we can do to protect our skin from invisible and visible UVA/UVB damage.

With the official start of summer only a few days ago, many of us are on the beach, at the lake, or on a boat. But, unfortunately, while we start to enjoy the first few days of hot weather, the UV index is also at its highest, which means more precautions are needed to keep your skin protected.

Let this be your reminder to go out and get yourself an SPF that covers all your bases before you are forced to use the old dried-up one hiding in the back of your cabinet…because we’ve all been there...

It can be hard to find a natural sunscreen that fits in with your skincare routine without leaving you shadowed by the dreaded white cast (especially when it comes to mineral-based products). Luckily, we found one that soaks into your skin within minutes AND pairs well with our Resurface Retinol Alternative Serum. While retinol products should not be worn during the day, our Botanical Retinol Alternative won't make you sun sensitive and can be a part of your morning skincare routine, followed by your facial oils and SPF. Used in tandem, your skin will be protected, hydrated and glowing.

Here is our recommended morning skincare routine to help you keep up with those sun rays:

Step 1: When you wake up, cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser or warm water if you have dry, acne-prone or sensitive skin. Then gently pat your face dry.

Step 2: Apply our Resurface Retinol Alternative to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while brightening and firming!

Step 3: Apply your daily moisturizer or oil. (We recommend our Hydrate Facial Oil — throughout the day, our skin works to protect itself from environmental damage, so it's important to use lightweight, absorbent oils with lots of antioxidants (such as baobab and maracuja) to protect against UV damage, pollution and other free radicals.)

Step 4: After your moisturizers/oils have had time to soak in, apply your sunscreen generously with clean hands (about the amount of two or three-finger lengths). Our current favourite sunscreen is the cocokind daily facial SPF.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the rest of your body and an SPF lip balm. I have been loving the natural Creamsicle SPF lip balm from Nezza Naturals. It's like a popsicle dream!

That's it! We know incorporating new products can be an adjustment, but if it means protecting your skin from unwanted long-term skin damage, we think it's well worth it.
