Bakuchiol (AKA Nature’s Botox) What It Is + How to Incorporate It Into Your Routine

You’ve most likely heard of retinol or use it in your skincare routine. Often touted as the miracle ingredient for aging skin — said to improve skin texture, fight wrinkles, fade scars and improve your complexion.

But, it can be quite harsh on skin (especially sensitive) and has a lot of drawbacks like: photosensitivity, skin irritation, dryness and redness. Additionally, most retinol is either lab-engineered or animal-derived.

That’s where Bakuchiol comes in. The plant-based, non-toxic retinol alternative that is often referred to as Nature’s Botox. So, what exactly is it and how do you incorporate it into your skincare routine?

What is Bakuchiol?

Derived from the Psoralea Corylifolia plant, also known as the Babchi plant. This natural plant-derived ingredient has roots in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, with a long history in skincare. Boasting powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties — Bakuchiol is effective in addressing signs of aging, increasing skin’s cell turnover, evening skin tone, restoring firmness and refining pores. Unlike Retinol, it does all of this without the photosensitivity, added side effects and irritation. Making it an amazing (and much safer + cleaner) alternative for your skin. Including oily, dry and sensitive skin types! Because it’s an antioxidant, Bakuchiol is also safe to use when pregnant and breastfeeding. (We still recommend consulting with your physician for specific concerns).

So if you’re looking for an ingredient with all the natural anti-aging properties and benefits without the harsh side effects, this ingredient is your match made in heaven.

Additional skin benefits:

  • Promotes and stimulates collagen
  • Reduces pigmentation
  • Repairs damaged skin cells
  • Refines skin texture
  • Brightens skin
  • Deeply penetrates skin to lessen the appearance of dark spots
  • Targets free radicals and helps to protect skin from pollution and environmental stressors
  • Fights acne-causing bacteria

How to incorporate Bakuchiol into your skincare ritual?

If you’re new to using Bakuchiol, we recommend incorporating a serum into your routine. Enter our Resurface Retinol Alternative Serum, formulated with 1% Bakuchiol (researchers have shown that levels between 0.5-1% are ideal for maximum effectiveness). Rich in Carrot Seed Oil, Bakuchiol and Niacinamide (amongst other wonderful plant-derived, vegan ingredients). Not only do these 3 ingredients work wonders together — they are excellent to help calm redness, hydrate the skin, brighten and plump. Similar to Bakuchiol, Niacinamide is an antioxidant that helps to brighten skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, refine skin texture and soothe skin. Great for all skin types, as well as acne-prone, oily and sensitive skin.

Shake before using and gently massage 2-4 drops evenly onto skin, both morning and night. Use after applying water-based creams and serums as the second to last step in your skincare routine at night. Finish with a facial oil.

In the morning if your routine is simpler / lighter — mix with your Hydrate Facial oil and apply last before makeup. Can also be used alone and will not cause any sun sensitivity in the morning. Ideal for Spring and Summer use as well, providing additional protection against UV damage and environmental damage / free radicals.

Bakuchiol is something that everyone should incorporate into their routine. If retinol results without irritation or side effects is what you’re after (especially if you have skin sensitivities, irritations or generally can’t tolerate retinol), Bakuchiol should be at the top of your list!
