What Happens to Your Skin While You Sleep & How to Wake Up with Youthful Skin.

We all know that a good night’s sleep is essential to feel rested and refreshed in the morning but did you know it’s also important when it comes to skin health?

Your skin rejuvenates itself while you sleep and using the right products at night are what will help you achieve healthy, clear skin.

During the day, our skin works to protect itself against environmental damages but while we’re sleeping our skin switches to recovery mode and the human growth hormone (HGH) kicks in; which is responsible for accelerating the skin’s repair and cell regeneration. At night, the regeneration process can be up to three times faster than during the day..and between 11pm and 4am, our cell production can double. If we’re in a deep sleep, cell turnover can increase by three times that.

Since our skin is more active at night, it is more permeable too. With means it’s more receptive to the skincare products you apply, but it also means that your skin will lose moisture — if things can get in, then things can also get out. Due to overnight moisture loss, your skin will be at its driest in the AM, which can also impair and damage your skin barrier.

Because of this, you’ll want to make sure you’re using the right products during your evening skincare ritual to support and maximize the skin’s renewal process but also provide enough moisture to compensate for nightly water loss.

Cleansing and detoxifying your skin is super important to remove buildup of pollutants that have accumulated throughout the day. Gently exfoliating with one of our Clay Masks can help remove dead skin cells and deeply cleanse your skin without removing your skin's natural oils.

Using a plant-based retinol alternative in the PM will help to accelerate the skin’s repair functions while you sleep, as well as boost collagen production and encourage epidermal cell renewal. Follow with a nourishing facial oil, like Restore, that is rich in linolenic and fatty acids to encourage skin growth and new cell generation. To further support collagen production and deeply hydrate the skin, reducing the effects of overnight moisture loss. After applying all of your PM products, to further reduce the moisture loss overnight, drink a glass or two of water right before bed.

In the AM, use a lightweight soothing face oil that absorb quickly to calm overactive skin, and that are high in antioxidants to protect your skin against environmental damages and UV light. Hydrate is an ideal AM oil. And, don’t forget SPF!
